The White River runs through Bethel and offers plenty of recreation options in the summer, including swimming, boating, tubing, and fishing. Silver Lake State Park is only 5 miles away in the village of Barnard. Identified as one of the 9 "greatest lakes" in New England by Boston Magazine with water among "the cleanest in the country". This picturesque lake has a beach area with snack bar, playground and boat rentals. For a cool dip on a hot summer afternoon, walk to the swimming hole at Locust Creek. Woodstock, touted as one of the "prettiest small towns" in America is a 20 minute drive down scenic route 12. This lovely town offers restaurants (from casual to upscale), shopping and entertainment. Hike Mt Tom or the Appalachian Trail. Be sure to visit Quechee, which features the Vermont Nature Center and Raptor Center. Also the Simon Pearce Restaurant and Glass-Blowing factory. Hot air ballooning, golf and riding the Vermont trains are also fun activities not to be missed. For some thrills head to the Pico Adventure Center for alpine slide, climbing walls, gondola rides, mini-golf, bungy jumping or mountain biking at Killington.
